Alara Reborn IN STOCK NOW.
Some Formats for Magic the Gathering.
Constructed
In Constructed events, players create decks in advance from cards they already own, and they bring their decks to the event. A Constructed Deck has at least 60 cards in it, and it can't have more than four copies of any cards except basic lands. There are five different Sanctioned Formats:
Block
These tournaments use only cards from a particular Magic Block: usually a large expansion and its two small expansions ( when they are released). For example, the Ravnica block consists of the Ravnica: City of Guils, Guildpact, and Dissension sets. Players in a Ravnica Block tournament can use only cards from these three sets. While most players play with just most recent blocks, you can play tournaments within certain blocks.
Standard
This is perhaps the most popular Constructed format: Cards from the current core set and usually the last two blocks ( four to seven expansions) can be played in these events. Many long time players refer to this type of format as " Type 2." although that term has been out of use for years.
Extended
This format uses cards from core sets and expansions from the past six to eight years.Extended is popular among players looking to expand their tournament skills.
Vintage
Players can use nearly any Magic card ever printed, but some cards are restricted. Players can't use more than one copy of a particular restricted card in their deck. Vintage is the only format with a restricted list.
Legacy
Except for a listof banned cards, players can use nearly any Magic card ever printed.
Limited
In Limited events, building decks is part of the competition. Players recieve an amount of unopened product and create the best deck possible using only those cards. A limited deck has to be at least 40 cards. There are 3 types of limited Deck events:
Sealed Deck
Sealed Deck is perhaps the easiest format for beginning players to learn. Players are given sealed product, usually either a tournament pack and two booster packs or five boosters. Each player opens the product provided and builds the best deck he or she can. Players can add basic lands to their decks but otherwise use only the cards they were given at the start of the event through the product.
Booster Draft
A booster Draft usually has eight players, but the format also works for four to ten players. Players are seated randomly around a table. Each player recieves three booster packs. Each players opens one booster pack, looks at the cards, and selects (drafts) one card. Then each player passes the remaining cards face down to the player on his or her left. Then when finished the same happens with the second pack but gets passed to the right, then the third same happens but passed back to left. Once the drafting is completed, each player should have 45 cards to use to create a deck of at least 40 cards. Players will have to add basic land cards.
Team & Two Headed Giant Tournaments
Team and Two Headed Giant Tournaments: Players compete as individuals in most tournaments, but many of the above formats listed can also be run as a team or Two Headed Giant Tournament. ( Two Headed Giant is a two on two multiplayer varient in which the two "heads" of a team have shared turns.)
